Janice: To Cortisone or Not to Cortisone? That first step in the morning…

Are you terrified of putting your feet on the ground first thing in the morning? Janice is. Don’t live like Janice. Get help for your Plantar Fasciitis Heel Pain today.

In this research article review we’ll be talking about Janice*, a 46 year old woman with plantar fasciitis heel pain. Janice is a hard worker. She eats right. She exercises three times a week for 30 minutes doing some light to moderate level walking with a friend. But when she wakes up in the morning it feels like someone is stabbing her heels with an ice pick.

Let’s tune in to the morning play by play.

“Looks like Janice is preparing for her first stunt, and I’ll tell ya, I haven’t seen someone look this nervous since 1996 olympic trials. Alright, she’s approaching the edge of her bed, and haha, that’s quite the inhale. I’ll tell ya she does not look confident today. … She’s praying, but looks like more out of desperation than hope. And I’ll tell ya what, this is appropriate for her to feel this nervous. This moment will define the rest of her day. … The judges look a little irritated with her lingering on the edge of the bed.  Bartholomeow, and Here-kitty-kitty are veteran judges of this sport. Did you know in their participation in these stunts I have never seen them do anything but land on their feet. They have an incredible track record. … Alright, looks like Janice has worked up the courage. She braces herself….aaaand sticks the landing! Oh!, Oh! She’s sitting back down…  Looks like she’s in agony. … Oh! She’s even lying down. And ya know, for being such harsh judges, they really are compassionate. Looks like Bartholomeow and Here-kitty-kitty are headed out to the field to serve as medics. Janice must be in a bad way. Bartholomeow is having to give her cheek CPR. Here-kitty-kitty appears to be performing an assessment to her dangling feet. Well, looks like today is going to be a rough one.”

Janice has tried everything. She has tried changing her shoes (four different pair), and this has been a little bit helpful. She has tried taking ibuprofen and tylenol with no lasting relief. She went to her primary care physician and he recommended some ice massage. This helped a bit, but the beginning and end of her day were still torture. Her physician gave her a cortisone injection but this only made her foot really sore for a few days, gave her relief for about a week, and then her symptoms came right back. When she asked for another injection her physician told her that more injections could lead to a rupture of her ligaments and tendons. So he sent her to physical therapy. This made it worse and it was super expensive. Her physician then put her in a boot. This was relieving in the morning when she put her feet down on the ground, but it was a hassle, lead to hip and back pain, and ultimately was no help at all: 8 weeks wasted. And the boot wasn’t cheap either. Her physician is now recommending surgery. But she doesn’t want to spend the money, or take the time. And going under anesthesia for surgery makes her very nervous.

If any of your story sounds like Janice’s story there is hope for relief from your pain, and you are not the only one going through this. Right now it is estimated that 2,000,000 people in the United States are dealing with Plantar Fasciitis heel pain. And as a clinician helping others with their heel pain I believe this number is grossly underestimated.

If you are in Janice’s situation then you want relief quickly and without racking up more large expenses. At Renewal Physical Therapy we give you the tools to take care of your body so you can spend less on medical professionals and more on the rest of your life for the glory of God and the good of others. We know how to fix plantar fasciitis heel pain. If you want to learn more about the anatomy behind your symptoms you can go to our other blog posts

The short of it is this: the tissue on the bottom of the foot called the plantar fascia is sick of being misused. It’s taking too much weight throughout the day and isn’t getting the rest it needs, even at night because of the source of the passive tension on the tissue in the calf muscles.
