Alex: PF Answers with Ultrasound Imaging

Welcome back to FixPF! A Renewal Physical Therapy campaign to give everyone the tools they need to fix plantar fasciitis heel pain so they can spend less on medical professionals and more on the rest of their lives.

Each episode will be a fictional case study based on real patients, and/or research articles from pubmed.

Alex* is a 50 year old man who has worked hard in his career to be the best construction worker in his tri-county area in rural Kansas. The result of his efforts? His skilled work is sought after not only in his tri-county area, but also in all of Kansas and the United States.

When you first meet Alex you’ll notice two things:

One, all the hair on the top of his head has migrated to a dapper gray goatee on his face.

And two, for all the skill he puts into his construction work, it pales in comparison to his mastered art form of listening carefully, speaking neither too little nor too much.

When asked a question he tilts his head forward and slightly to the side giving your every word his ear.

When speaking he crosses his arms and rocks slightly back, and with a jovial smile (complete with crow’s feet) he informs or entertains his listener while maintaining the posture of a man ready to listen or to act for others.

And after 35 years of construction work, sprinkled in with the stiffness of 50 years of age, Alex’s left heel feels like a broadsword is hacking it off everyone morning his feet hit his beautifully stained oak-wood floors. He’s no pansy. He troops on through each painful step. He gets to work and his work boot wraps his heel in a cozy hug…until he sits for a 5 minute quick-lunch. Then his heel roars with pain again. The pain calms in the early afternoon but steadily begins to increase until he collapses in his easy chair after work.

Alex is a very thoughtful man. His expert skill at construction is no match for his artful skill with people. And his callused hands are no match for his library. He understands time and money. He works hard to not waste any of his customers time and money, and he doesn’t want his time and money wasted.

He met a physical therapist three years ago who helped him get his back into place when it got out-of-whack. He could call him first, but Alex wants to know for certain what is happening prior to attempting to get his problem fixed. He has heard his cousin’s healthcare stories and he doesn’t want to go through a 6 month journey of not solving his problem for a grand total of 50 hours and $5,000.  So he does some research and finds out that he may have plantar fasciitis. The cheapest route to confirming this is an Ultrasound. He uses MD save to find the cheapest Ultrasound around. And sure enough, the ultrasound results and his online physician’s diagnosis confirm that he has plantar fasciitis.

The only issue is that he has to be out of town for the next four weeks on a job sight and can’t make any appointments to get his heel pain fixed. He gets on google and has trouble finding any medical professional who can assure that he or she can fix his problem. What Alex really wants are the tools to fix his heel pain on his own.

Does any of this sound like your problem? If so, at Renewal Physical Therapy we give our patients the tools to take care of their body so they can spend less on medical professionals and more on the rest of their life. Todd Rundell

*P.S. Alex is based on the research article reviewed, and on two of our actual patients (yes, one of them is a very skilled construction worker, and artful listener). Without sharing personal or protected information we’d be happy to share the specific story for each of those patients if you would like. Or you can check out our Google reviews or testimonials on our website.
